People often live together with being married or in a civil partnership. There is a widely held myth that they have a "common law" marriage because they have lived together for a certain period of time or because they have children together. This is not the case and the position for cohabitees is very different than for people who are married or in a civil partnership.

There is no one piece of law which applies to cohabitees. Instead your legal rights will depend on a lot of different sources of law and can be very complicated.

Cohabitation Agreements

If you do not wish to marry or enter a civil partnership, it is possible to enter into a cohabitation agreement which will set out what you and your partner want to happen in the event of a relationship breakdown. There are a range of matters which can be included in these agreements.
